Android Question

Got a nice Router (Netgear R7000).
Got a nice tablet (Asus TF701)

What I don't have is a way to VPN into either work or home.

PPTP doesn't work (been broken for some time)
OpenVPN doesn't work (Does'nt support TUN?)

Is Android basically useless when it comes to remote connections (Have the devs basically given up on the business side of things)? Am I going to have to go out & buy and damned Windows device as well?

Android has an internal VPN solution and works fine on most devices without issues. Android (Version 4 and above) currently support”

- PPTP
- L2TP/IPSec PSK
- L2TP/IPSec RSA
- IPSec Xauth PSK
- IPSec Xauth RSA
- IPSec Hybrid RSA

There are a lot of variables with VPN, and different ways you setup your connection and security. In order to help you we would need to have an open dialogue (which you can do by registering) so we can see if there is a way to get your VPN up and running!

Hi

Yes, and the app openVPN Connect works well on Android {free on playstore) If you are running an openvpn server at home that may be your solution.

Tried PPTP to connect to work, no dice. from what I've read, it only works if encryption is off. Not an option if I want to connect to work, and keep my job.

OpenVPN says: Sorry but the android VPN api doesnt support TAP based tunnels

Hi again

Yes it does not support tap but does support tun, which is what you asked about in your original post

Roger

It appears that problem is the stock implementation of openVPN on the router.

"Does not support Android or iOS connections"

Seriously! With more & more people foregoing the PC for the tablet & phone, they don't consider iOS & Android to be relevant.

I still have a beef with the devs with regards to PPTP (unencrypted support only). Very sad & lame.
