Just clicked on a book-marked page I've been to loads of times, and this red 'skull and bones https' thing appeared; I've never seen it before; what's it all about??

answer basically states that its a warning icon to let you know that som of the resources on the site were not loaded securely using SSL.

I believe Twitter uses SSL to encrypt its data, but it's only optional to use. Perhaps that's why you get the icon if you don't have SSL enabled for your account.

No idea about account options, that was just twitter.com, once logged in the icon become a grey & white globe though.

It's a mixed content warning. It means not everything loaded from the page was loaded securely.

It isn't that bad if it's on a well-know, big-name site. It comes up a lot on my Google Reader, so I don't worry too much.

It's because google recently updated chrome. It's got harmful substance detection software that controls various hardware and peripherals on your computer to determine if it's safe while you're browsing to be sitting near your computer. That symbol looks like it stands for arsenic, watch out!
