I'm new to Android. What's this red lock icon at the top left??

I'm not sure,could be an unsecure site you've visited & Google throwing a flag up?
Go to Settings > Apps > Application manager > Running apps & see what's running now,use process of elimination by killing the processes one by one or do the same in reverse:
Run in Safe Mode & enable one app at a time until the red lock icon re-appears...........

Easier yet, pull down the notification bar and long-press the notification. It will tell you which app generated it.
