Help Whats using my data space?

I am new to the forum, and being an older man, I probably don't know everything my S5 active can do. My question right now is of the 16.00 GB data space I have almost 10.00GB used up. I dont believe I have that many apps, I do have alot of pics, I'll admit. One thing that confounds me is under the used space it says 3.07MB is being used for downloads, and when I pull up the downloads, it says there are none??? If anyone can help with that, that would be great. Also, any tips on cutting down the storage space being used on my phone?? Does it matter??? I have a SD card in, and have put all I know I can on it, but that doesn't seem like much. So, any suggestions, or advice would be great. AND is there anywhere I could get a dummy guide that would explain to me all that the S5 is capable of doing? Thanks in advance. Signed, confused old man. lol

The first thing to understand is that "16 GB" is the total installed storage, which includes the space used by the operating system and system caches. So even straight out of the box I would expect you have about 9-10GB available (I don't know the S5 Active very well, but the plain S5 gives you something in that range).

As for the SD card, I would have thought that is the obvious place to put pictures myself.
 
Although your phone is listed as having 16GB of that there are only 11.2 GB usable by you. The rest is used by the OS and depending on what apps your carrier has added you lose more space. Here's a tip. move the pics from the Phone to the SD card each one of your highest quality pics takes up about 6.5MB per image. Every 154 images or so at that resolution takes up a GB of space. So how many is a lot?
