I hear some jobs touting a 'work from home' option, which may seem great, but is it?

If I'm working in a team, I like to be around the other people. Instant messaging and conference calls are fine, but there's no substitute for face to face comms, in my opinion. Most human communication is non verbal, so you lose all that on an audio conference call.
Working remotely can also be quite isolating, for me anyway. Plus if you have a family, there may be distractions that you wouldn't get if you were in the office.

What do you reckon? Would you love a job where you could work purely from home?

It depends what I'm doing. Some things it's vital to talk to people in person, but often if I've a specific task I want to get on with I find it more effective to just work from home (never mind the time it saves not travelling). So having the option works for me.

Yes the not travelling aspect does appeal, a lot. But in practice, the only way I could see it really working for me, is if I was doing a project that involved only myself. I can very happily work on Android app projects and other things as personal projects. And that's great because I get to make all the technical decisions :)

I need the quiet of home to get certain things done, which is why at least one day a week is in my contract. Granted there are aspects of a job that work better with immediate communication, but at times it just becomes a constant cacophonous interruption and nothing gets done.

Depends, work at home is good for people who are disabled, single parents. Everyone has different needs.

I don't even want to work from work!

I've never worked from home but I suspect it's much like being self employed which I have been for many years. It takes a certain amount of discipline and self motivation. If I could do the work I do daily from home I'm certain I'd be more productive. I enjoy the social aspects of working in a group but often it seems that people just want to kill time and my time gets killed right along with theirs.

I did it in my last job and loved it.

We used Google hangouts to communicate within the team. We could turn off audio or video (or both) if you didn't want to be heard or seen and not be bothered.

I don't need the people to people interaction because I don't like people (LOL just a joke)

Now, I'm in a small office w/a small team and we have an annoying co-worker who is lonely and has to hear himself talk and gossip and is very loud.

I wish I was working at home again.

Despite the fact working from home sounds appealing there's no way I ever could. I might get away with it for a month or two but eventually my boss will realise I've just been on my PlayStation. If I hide my online status I might make it 3 months though:D

I agree. I'm retired and trying to get some of my own life's goals knocked out. I'm an aspiring musician/songwriter and I'm starting from scratch. I'm also an author, and I am way past my goal in getting my 4th book out. I've set aside 3 hours a day and those are my work hours - but then I have this Darling Bride who's post-op, two little money pit dogs, and the thousand other things that keep nipping away at my time! Setting work hours and having the discipline and determination to adhere to those hours are my biggest problem.

Now my sister has been working from home for years... but her husband works and she's just there alone. She can do that, and she's managing other people. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with all the distractions.

Yeah, it doesn't work for everyone.

My son is in school most of the day and my wife sleeps during the day (She works overnight shifts).

I love pets but I have none right now.

Basically an empty house for me.

Plus, my work and the database I use is internet based. No other hardware needed. My internet is blazing fast and blows out the internet at work.

I'm doing it today.

Though it's because my wife is expecting a delivery which she needs for tonight and was going to be out all day, so since I can be flexible a lot of the time I decided to solve the problem by working from home. Ironically it's getting late and I'm still waiting for this delivery, becoming nervous that they won't do it in time (periodically check for a "we tried to deliver but you were out" card having been surreptitiously pushed through the door - I've had that before, where they post such a card without bothering to knock or ring).

Luckily (not) a delivery vehicle cannot get within 200' of my house before the dog bell goes off
Sometimes nothing gets past them and other times they are just too tired to bother. Well. When I say they I mean Tickle, being a German Shepherd she's pretty good at guarding. Raphael, being a Greyhound, is just pretty good at sleeping  I'm also giggling that you said dog bell, it's what I call it too.
