WhatsApp default text message for non-WA users

Anyone know a way to get rid of WhatApp's default text that's pre-filled out when you want to text someone not using WhatsApp?

What I mean is every time I want to send a text to a contact who isn't using WhatsApp, the compose message area is pre-filled with the "Check out WhatsApp Messenger..." spam, and I have to delete that before writing a message. I'd like it to just start out blank so I can start typing.

I've searched here and on Google, but not found a solution. I apologize if I've missed it, and thanks to anyone who can help.

Are you using Whatsapp as your default messaging app? Have you tried clearing the defaults for Whatsapp?

Settings -> Apps -> All -Whatsapp -> Clear Defaults.

Thanks for the quick reply! Good idea about clearing defaults, but unfortunately it says there are no defaults set.

Setting Whatsapp as the default messaging app gets rid of the default spam text, but adds a new problem. Each time I try to send a text to someone who doesn't use Whatsapp, I get a pop-up giving me the choice of sending it as an SMS, inviting the person to join Whatsapp, or resetting the default messaging app.

Unless I'm missing something, it seems like one way or the other, there's going to be an extra step involved.

I've whatsapp installed, but it doesn't behave in the way you describe, very odd.

I'll have a mess about, see if I can get it to do what it's doing for you, then see if I can find a solution.

Maybe it's the way I'm getting to the app? These are the steps I'm taking:

1. Gesture search to bring up non-WhatsApp contact.

2. With contact details displayed, press message button next to primary phone number.

3. With "Complete Action Using" displayed, select WhatsApp

4. Default messaging app appears with WhatsApp spam text already filled in.

That's how it works with no default app set.

With WhatsApp set as the default messaging app, after step 2 I get the screen that says "You seem to be trying to send a WhatsApp message to a phone number that is not registered with WhatsApp." It goes on for a few sentences before giving me the choice to send an SMS, invite the person to WhatsApp, or reset the default choice.

How is it supposed to work to send an SMS to a non-WhatsApp contact?

I don't think you can, you're probably best using the stock messaging app for non whatsapp contacts TBH. Because it's not using Whatsapp to send the message, rather the stock messaging app, there's no real benefit (messages will still eat into your SMS allowance) and you get that spammy text which you have to delete.

That's the conclusion I was coming to also. I've got a question in to WhatsApp to see if they've got a different answer, and I'll post it here if they respond with anything helpful.

Thanks for your help, El Presidente! :)
