WhatsApp - Privacy?

I've never liked the thought of WhatsApp so have never used it. Sadly I have had to install it for a family member.

So what's the score with privacy? I have switched off the following:

• Last seen - nobody,
• Profile photo - nobody,
• About - nobody,
• Status - selected,
• Live location - none.

Can anyone that has my phone number still see me and contact me? I have work contacts that need to stay as work contacts and do not wish to be sharing anything with them, even the fact I have WhatsApp.

Under status I have selected the contacts I wish to speak with, how come you don't have the same option with the other options? Is this app just fully open for everyone to see you?
