Yes you can, after all that's how we do Whatsapp in China, or can use a VPN.

I use a VPN myself. Express VPN, once that's setup and connected, Whatsapp can work as normal. What VPN or proxy are you actually trying to use? Are you in a place or country where Whatsapp is blocked?

Well I use tor on my Linux PC, and thought of trying torbot as my first choice but wondered if there's anything 'better or easier to setup' for android.
Well you've got the official Android TOR app. Which is what I would recommend.

As for actually using it, don't know. TOR doesn't work in China now, where I am. I've gone to using paid VPN services. TOR is a protocol known by governments e.g. China, companies, academic organizations, etc, and can be detected and blocked.

Is there no free VPN's for Android?
Yes, there's things like Snap VPN, etc.

Although how well they work, or always busy, or very limited use, or if they're full of ads is another matter. That's a very common problem with "free", because after all it does cost money to maintain and run the VPN servers.
