When making a phone call the screen blacks out

If something is blocking the proximity sensor there is no solution other than to unblock it.

A competently-designed case or screen protector won't do this, so it's not as if the phone has to go unprotected.

Usually the cases available in market dont block these sensors as this point is kept in mind while designing a case. Yes a screen protector could be culprit if it covers area where sensors are sited under the screen. So changing that might be an option. Also try to clean screen area with soft lint cloth, can use moist cloth as well not wet though.

try entering *#0*#.
press sensor
keep focus on proximity sensor value.
now bring your finger near sensor area and move it away. repeat process. the sensor values will be changed alongwith color telling u its working fine or not

Cleaning that part of the phone worked without me having to pull off my screen. Protector

Was that screen protector designed SPECIFICALLY for the 2XL? Or was it one of the "universal" variety?

You might have has a bubble that was giving you a false reading, but if it starts doing it again you may need to consider replacing the screen protector, or going without one.
