Help When receiving a Text Message

As i'm completely new to the android world I was wondering if anyone knows if when you receive a text message the screen will light up like it does when you receive a call etc.

At the moment when I am at work it is hard to hear the vibrate and the small green light doesn't always catch my eye.

Anyone help would be amazing

I own a Galaxy Nexus and I haven't used the stock messaging app on Android since I discovered Handcent. You can download it from the market and go into the settings on Handcent, notification settings, check enable popup, then below it go into popup settings and check screen on for popup and change the timeout to however long you want the screen to stay on after the popup.

My wife owns an HTC Rezound and the settings for that are different. I'll check with her phone this afternoon and see if there is an option there for the stock messaging app.

Both GoSMS and Handcent are great (GoSMS allows some customization of how the "popup" looks), there is also an "SMSPopup" app that I used previously, but in ICS it messed up my notification settings- even with it disabled and stock notifications enabled, I would receive no notification until I uninstalled it.
 
On stock text system, you get the profile picture on the phone even on lock.
Very close to getting a call in look.
