Two years ago a slew of us got the DX on 2 year contracts and it seems the migration to the new HD is minimal at best. What gves? Did they all go to the SG3? Iphone? Very curious as there seemed to be a lot of chatter about the HDs. Interested also because my MaxHD seems to be very unstable and with 8 days left on the 14 day return period I sure want to know where to go other than back to my DX and wait.
On Motorola's site there is a 64 page user manual for the HD which will answer a lot of the basic questions I have seen pop up here. Good reading and helps with understanding some of the new things on the phone. I found it helpful dispite having a tablet with ICS already. Some of the stuff is Verizon/Motorola specific after all. At the end of this manual and I think somewhere in the middle it gives Reboot instructions, My advice--- Ignor it. I did it maybe 3 times yesterday and each time I had nothing but more trouble. It says hold down power and volume down at the same time for ten seconds or so. Then you may have to press power again. At a minimum your volume is turned off. In one of my cases I lost my notification tone as well. In another I lost page 3 of my home pages. In all cases I got a new shortcut from one of my apps on page 3 of home screens. Never the same one.
Why was I doing it? I can't remember all the reasons due I guess to the frustration of what happened. I think the first reason caused the other two because of what happened.
I copied two large picture files from my PC to the phone. One was 200 pics the other 800 pics. PC said it was successful but looking at the gallery each file was missing pictures even though on the gallery page it said 200 and 800. Neither would do a slide show when I pressed that button either. Each one stalled part way through. I think thats when I started the reboot process thinking it needed to re-synch itself. As I said each one of those made things worse to the point I went to bed thinking I was going to own an oversized SG3 before the weekend.
I was out all morning but this afternoon I looked at the (old) Max forum for how things went after the ICS update. I saw a post about rebooting and data cache clearing, two things I did a lot on the DX when it acted up. Figuring I had nothing to lose I followed the instructions and they still work. And... All my pictures are now there. And... didn't lose volume in the process or get a new shortcut. Do yourself a favor and print the following out and put it where you will find it:
1. Turn the phone off
2. Press and hold the power button and the vol up AND vol down keys all at the same time untill it loads into the screen where you can select "recovery"
3. Use the vol down key to highlight "recovery" then use the vol up key to select it
4. Wait for it to boot up (not pressing anything) untill you see an Android and a ! Inside of a triangle.
5. Once that screen appears, press the vol up and vol down key at the same time
6. It should load the recovery menu, press the vol down key to get down to "wipe cache" then use the power key to select it
7. When it is done, go to "reboot system now" and select it with the power key.
The time between step 2 and 3 is quick so read it a few times before you do it. Nothing bad will happen but you will have to start over. Perhaps incresing you screen sleep time before hand helps. I was set to 1 min. I did both the cache clearing and the reboot. Both of these I used to do on the DX when it acted up.
I am going to put this phone to the max (ha ha) over the next few days to see if I just caused the hicup with the big data load and what maybe a faulty reboot process. I like the phone a lot and don't want to let it go unless that is the smart thing. Good luck with your phones.
