Apps where is launcher icon/widget layout stored?

i think this is a pretty basic question, but i can't for the life of me find the answer.

where does android store the icon/widget layout for the launcher? that is, how does it know which icons/widgets are placed where on the various screens? what if you have a 3rd party home app? does it use the same location or have one of its own?

perhaps i'm using some incorrect terminology here, but i hope you understand what i mean.

the icon used for the launcher is in the res/drawable directory of your project
