Android Question

I have a Bauhn ASP-500H and am trying to tether it by either USB or WIFI to a laptop running Windows 7.
When I connect it windows asks for the "Network Security Key" and I have no idea where to find that on the phone. Have looked everywhere in setting that I can find with no luck.
It's pretty urgent as it is my wife's and she needs it to get some stuff done for work in the next few hours.
Please help!

Unfortunately there is no IT department to ask as it is her personal laptop & personal phone which she is trying to use at home.
Not sure I've explained properly what she is trying to do so I'll try again.
Apologies for my lack of knowledge of both the technology and terminology involved.

She is trying to use the phone as a modem for her laptop so there is no other modem or other wireless devices involved.
She tells me that when she tries to get windows 7 to connect to the phone, windows asks for this "Network Security Key" thing and she can't connect without it.
We have the same Bauhn ASP-5000H phones and think I somehow managed to find it on the phone a few weeks ago but can't remember where. Perhaps I'm mistaken but if not on the phone, where else would it be since the phone is the modem?

Found it!!!!!

I'll post it here in case someone else needs the info...........

Settings > More (In Wireless & Networks) > Tethering & portable hotspot > Long Press on Turn on Wi-Fi hotspot > Set up Wi-Fi hotspot (set a network name & password, leave security as it is) then back two screens and turn on Wi-Fi hotspot.
Get your laptop to look for the wireless hotspot by the name you assigned and enter the password.

THANKYOU fingeric62. I have a Samsung Galaxy Y that differs a little from your Bauhn ASP-500H, but the basics are close ... & I wouldn't have managed to set up the Samsung as a modem without your help ..... THANKS again,
I followed your instructions to "long press on wi-fi" .... I didn't need "long press". "Set up wi-fi hot spot" was what I needed ..... there was a previous password, (that I cannot remember ever putting in there), I changed it to something I can remember.
The p.c. immediately saw the phone .... but alas, they weren't yet on friendly terms. I put them both in their naughty corners, i.e., I shut them both down !
I started the p.c. first, & once it was booted up, I fired up the phone .... I asked the p.c. to get online via the phone .... it wanted my password, (the new one I just put on the phone) ...... & WHACKO .... we were away.

Third time THANKS fingeric62. I am sure I would be contemplating taking an axe to the computer if not for your advice. ! :) :)

I can reaffirm this is the case for Samsung phones.

Settings/More Networks/Mobile Hotspot/

then you have to turn it ON, then it presents the Password, once you have your device setup to automatically use that Hotspot:

By far, the easiest way to access Hotspot is to go to the Notification Panel.
  • click on Menu ( 4 squares )
  • click on the Pencil ( Edit )

Now search down into the lower realms of the options available and find Hotspot and drag it up onto the top line of the Notification Panel.

once you do that, you can turn Hotspot on/off in a flash just by pulling down the Notification bar once.

Hi

I changed the thread title to make it easier for people to find if they are having the same issue.

I have an Android 8.1.0 Alcatel phone. This is how I found the network security key.

Make sure tethering (I did it with a USB), mobile data and hotspot are on.

Go to:
Settings / Network and Connections / Hotspot and tethering / Mobile hotspot / Set up mobile hotspot
Show password will allow you to view the network security key.

Hope this helps...

Welcome to Android Forums, Task252!

it was very nice of you to explain the solution with current info, since the original post and its solution were from 2013. I'm sure it'll help someone who's searching for a solution! :)
