3rd party app ? Which one ?

Are the secure ones by-passable ? What happens if one forgets their password ? Is the fingerprint lock reliable ?

I always used pattern lockscreen even since when I brought my first android phone ZTE Blade back in the day.

Hi, I use an app called "screen off and lock", excellent app and even more customisation if you get the paid for version. Phil

First "swipe" offers no security, so not a good idea IMHO. I'm currently using a "pattern" because I find it more convenient than a PIN. Note that a pattern lock is backed up with a pin in case you forget pattern. A password is potentially very secure, but the more complex you make it the more effort involved in unlocking. I haven't tried the fingerprint option so can't comment on how reliable it is. Hopefully it works better than the facial recognition unlockers I've tried in the past which couldn't recognize my face most of the time.

In addition to locking the screen I recommend using a locking app - I use AppLock - to protect my sensitive apps, eg email. The free version of AppLock works just fine.

I'm in the camp of "hope I never loose it", and don't use a lock screen at all.

I have a Neck Strap tied to the case and the phone lives in my shirt pocket unless it is in my hands.
Then the strap goes over my neck.

I've carried a cell phone since Motorola started making one smaller than a car trunk.
Never, ever have I lost one.

Anyone remember the Lunch Box?

and this one, actually portable on your belt if you didn't mind a 4 lb boat anchor on your hip.

Actually had the one before that one, the 40 lb box on the right sat in the car trunk or behind the seat of a pickup truck. The "head unit" mounted on the console somewhere in the cab.

Martin Cooper is the guy we should all remember, it was he who invented the "cell phone".

I use the fingerprint scan. Most of the time it is reliable. If your finger has any moisture on it, the scanner will not work most of the time though. During those moments I enter the backup password. Either way, little effort is involved and I know I'm secured. If you think you'd forget your password, write it down somewhere so that your not screwed if you do forget.
