I know Verizon has a app called backup assistant and another one called backup assistant according to the app store the cloud one seems like the most popular. So is that what most users are using really ? All I want to do is backup my contacts that so when I get a new phone I can upload the contacts in the new phone. Is any backup app already installed ? I have a LG G2 phone by the way. Thanks

I quit using the Verizon apps... they are too intensive on the device, and don't always work.

I use Super Backup to make backups of everything, it defaults to the extSDcard, and then I hit the Share icon and send them to my email address. That gives me two copies of everything.

You can do the same thing with Nova launcher, I send copies of it to my email and store it in a special Folder named "Nova".
works a treat if you ever FDR your device.... you can import your apps, SMS, Contacts, in a few clicks.... Click on the Nova backup in your email Folder and the phone automatically rebuilds all of your homescreens and folders.

I use ...
Pixel Phone Pro – phone/contacts finally done right
... it has it's own backup/restore capability.

I use Nova Launcher Prime and Pixel Phone Pro and all added apps are from either Play Store or written by me. My apps are in a single folder. Transfers for me are download's from Play Store or phone to PC and PC to phone using a USB cable.

Hmmm...I used Pixel Phone years ago. Agree it is the best app in its category. Kind of a forgotten gem these days. But I just use the standard Contacts and Dialer anymore, they do all I need.

Even though I am on Verizon, I use nothing of Verizons' apps.
Are your contacts stored on the device itself?"

Yes the contacts are on the device currently.

All my contacts are also Google contacts. As soon as I log in on a new phone, they all come back automatically.

I'm not sure how that would work, I have a gmail. But I use primaly Hotmail.

I don't understand how this works, how do I sync my contacts with google ?

You need to get your contacts saved to your Google account, if they are not already. Log into your Google account online and check to see if all your contacts are in you Gmail contacts list. If they are you're good to go. To make sure they're saved to Google in the future, just go to:
Settings > Accounts > Google > Select your account > Enable contacts sync.
This is enabled by default.

If your contacts are not in Gmail, the following steps will put them there. You have saved contacts to local storage on the phone only. To export those contacts, import them to Gmail, delete all contacts on the phone and resync clean a contacts list to the phone follow these steps:

1. Turn off sync in the phone. This is to prevent it from attempting to sync while changes are made.
2. Open the Contacts app and tap Menu. Select Import/export, then Export to storage. The contacts will be exported as a .vcf file. Make a duplicate copy of the .vcf as a safety backup.
3. Delete all contacts on the phone. Do:
Settings >Apps > Google contacts > Clear cache > Clear data.
When finished, there should be no contacts on the phone.
4. Login to Gmail and import the .vcf file into Gmail contacts.
5. In Gmail contacts, click on More and select Merge duplicate contacts.
6. Check the list for errors and do any needed edits. When satisfied export a .vcf file copy for backup.
7. Enable contacts sync on the phone and wait for the corrected contacts list to download.

Done.
