I have an icon that appeared on my HTC one M8 phone. it is a solid white circle with a line (-) in the middle. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

I believe it's the "Do Not Disturb" icon. You may have inadvertently enabled it in your settings.
You should be able to pull the notification bar down and disable it.
Otherwise in your menu/settings/sounds, scroll down to the "Do Not Disturb" option to disable it.
