Help White dot in notification area

My husband is reporting a white dot in his notification bar starting this morning. When he pulls it down, it becomes a white dot inside a larger gray dot and all it says is Google next to it. When he clicks it, a Google help page comes up. Has anyone seen this?

What kind of phone does he have? That sounds a lot like the notifications in the yet unreleased Android "N".

Oh, this is going to drive me nuts because this exact same thing happened to either myself or someone else in these forums a couple of years ago.
It got figured out... But I can't remember what it was.
Darn it.

Why can't anybody tell me what the white dot is on my home screen notification bar

If it's a single white dot, it usually means that you have more notifications than will fit in the notification area. This is for both app icons on the left and system icons on the right.
