Spent the $100+ on Prime membership, mostly for video. Kinda regretting the purchase altogether, as Prime doesn't really offer any good free videos to watch. Crap. At least I have access to a few seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants. Would be worth it if I shopped from Amazon

I'm quite the opposite as I don't watch video whatsoever....I just got it for the shipping part

As much as I try to squelch my capitalistic materialism I can't deny my Amazon account gets used more than it should. Every so often I get pissed at it, like when it started to exclude selling products like Chromecasts and lying about why, but eventually I always wimp out and go back. Sigh....
I also use Amazon and have made it better with Swagbuck - which is a site where by shopping Amazon (and other online sites) using their links you get awarded Swagbucks (effectively a penny) for what amounts to an instant rebate (currently 7% at Amazon) that can later be redeemed for gift cards (at say Amazon) or deposited to Paypal. There are also many other ways to earn SB doing other Internet activities to earn a little "beer money"

In contrast with Swagbuck there's also AmazonSmile, where 0.5% of all your purchases go to whichever non-profit charity you choose.

Counterpoint - get 7% back through Swagbucks and then donate all or part to your favorite charity (many of which you can do directly from SB) ;-)

I got prime for the shopping, but I have found myself using the music and video more and more. It's a nice perk.

But here in the real world only a very tiny percentage of consumers will do this. An automated way that requires as little user interaction as possible is typically more reliable.

I use Amazon. This benighted town has absolutely nothing I want.
Most often there are a bunch of repeats. Also, you can add watches for things you may be interested in and get alerted for when the deal opens up. Then if the price isn't right, just ignore it. As far as "deals" that's the least of what I use prime for. As I started using Amazon more and got tired up worrying about shipping, prime became worth it. Whether I'm ordering $1 or $500, I just put it in my cart and check out and is there in a day or two.
