Why are some .docx files not being read by any .docx viewer?

Today, I had several .docx files to read on my Samsung Galaxy. I was surprised when I saw a notification that told me that "No apps can perform this action" (I had already downloaded the Hancom Office Viewer). OK, I went to Google Play store, and installed Google Docs, the actual Microsoft Office App, and another app, the Basic Docx Reader---and there were several DOCX files that I couldn't open with any of them. When I could view any of these files in a menu, by browsing inside one of the apps, these file names would be greyed out; when that wasn't the case, I couldn't see them at all, when browsing from within the app. But of course, going through My Files or the download history, those docx files would always be there.

I went home, and was able to d/l and view them on a desktop app, so its not as if these files are corrupt, or empty.

What was going on here? Is there something I can do to avoid this in the future?
