Phone is Samsung mini 3 - have transferred the bmp files to my PC running Windows XP but cannot open them as the format is said not to be a proper bitmap format - don't understand

Very starnge indeed. The fact that XP states "not proper format" tells me you have proper file association set on your computer. I think I would have to test this to proceed further. Can you share the name of the app that is creating the .bmp files?
