Why can't I add google contacts to an existing group?

I don't know, because I can on my phone - just select a contact and edit it.
Could you post again and tell us what phone you are using, what software, and how you are trying to add them to groups (via your GMail on the web, or the phone app)? That would help us identify the problem.
