Why can't my APK files be seen/read?

I put two different versions of Super Hexagon as an APK in the root folder of my SD card. I then booted up APK installer, and to my surprise, it can read every file except the APK file. As in, in the list of all the files in a folder, every file in that folder will be shown except for the APK (coincidence...)
So... anyone know what's going on? Not even my file manager can view it on my Android.

In the few instances where I installed an app from an APK, I didn’t use an APK installer at all, never even occurred to me. I put the APK in the root of the SD like you did, then just tapped the thing. It asked for confirmation and off we went.

Have you got the install from unknown sources option enabled in the Applications menu?

Without that you can only install from the Play Store.

Or do you mean that your file manager can't even see that it's there?

I have install from unknown on, yes.
And what do you mean you just tapped it? My problem is I can't physically see the app anywhere on my phone. It's there in the root, but nothing can find it.
