Help Why didn't lock screen pattern or backup PIN work today?

Tom Burke

Lurker
Weird and disturbing incident with my Samsung Galaxy S5 (Android 6.0.1) this morning!

I woke up and grabbed it to check for new messages. I drew the lock screen pattern that I've used (problem-free) for years. This message appeared: "Incorrect pattern drawn." Well, I've drawn the pattern incorrectly before once or twice, so I drew it again, this time slower and with more care. Still I saw "Incorrect pattern drawn." I tried it a third and fourth time with the same result.

Slight panic begins at this point. At the bottom of the screen, some other options have now appeared, including the option to use my backup PIN instead. I tapped that and the PIN entry screen popped up. I entered the 4-digits that I've also been using for years and THAT DIDN'T WORK EITHER! I tried the PIN one more time, unsuccessfully.

Well, I knew I'd better not keep trying the same pattern and PIN number over and over, for fear of getting permanently locked out, so I thought it might be a good idea just to power the phone off and then on again.

This worked! My PIN number unlocked the SIM card and my old pattern unlocked my screen as it normally would.

All I would like to know is, why did this happen? It has only happened this one time in the four years I've had this phone. Anyone out there familiar with this?

Restarting an Android is like giving it an enema, a vitamin drink, a caffiene pill, and a massage all at once!
