Why Do Some Texts Go To Stock Messaging App & Other's Don't?

I've used ChompSMS for a couple years now. For some reason, starting a few weeks ago, when one of my friends text me, it comes in via the stock Messaging app instead of ChompSMS. This particular friend just switched from a Windows phone to a Samsung S7 and he's never used an Android phone before.

My guess is that there's some setting he's got set where the Messaging app isn't using his cell service when both the sender and the recipient have Google accounts and an Android device with the messaging app?? Just a guess. I guess I need to confirm which app he's using.

Is my guess right? So how do I rectify this? It's driving me nuts having to use two SMS apps.

ChompSMS suggested they may have gotten added to the blacklist (blocked users) but I saw it happen with two different people and I'm pretty sure I never blocked them. I ended up uninstalling ChompSMS, clearing all data, and reinstalling and haven't seen the issue arise. Might also have been from an update but I thought any updates for my LG G4 at this point have just been security updates, however I also noticed I started getting prompts of what app to launch for certain links so it's almost like the default apps got reset, but I also tried that. I guess doing a bunch of things at the same time make it hard to pinpoint what solved it and thereby what the specific cause was.

I've had both Chomp and Textra refuse to work. A couple of times on a Nexus 4 (rooted)
and the same on an Oppo Find 7. So far, so good on the MXPE.

All phones were bought unlocked, and I'm wondering if some of it isn't carrier related.

The TMO receipt for payment received also stopped coming as a text (Oppo and MXPE - TMO upgraded their system after I got the Oppo). I finally offered TMO a deal on the community site, They had been adding data to my phone which I didn't need. I said I'd swap for the payment notice. After that, the notice started appearing. I won't install the TMO app. I will use a secured Linux desktop to pay bills.

I think Textra or Chomp quit one time since I forget to delete conversations. I must have had 500 in there over a couple of years.

if I get a string of text messages with photos in them, I delete the conversation and start all over.

never had a problem with any texting app, but, Textra is my favorite
