when did they start making them for both CDMA and GSM? why?

I guess it's a Verizon International version that is able to support GSM for travel?

They didn't really, someone is taking Editorial License since they will all work on 4g LTE,

but, there are precious few places where the other matching cell towers are available for the phone to work on the opposite vendor AT&T/VZW, Sprint, etc...
