Why does 4G LTE icon appear while on WiFi in some apps?

When I open up certain apps the 4G LTE icon will appear while I'm connected to WiFi. If I leave the app the icon will go away again. This is annoying, and I'm wondering if it will impact my data usage.

This problem was fixed by disabled Download Booster on older Samsung phones, but the Note 5 doesn't have that (at least on AT&T.)

Anyone else having this problem, or know how to fix it?

Is the "smart network switch" option turned on or off in your wifi settings?

The problem could be the smart network switch feature in your wifi settings if it is determining that the wifi signal you are on is not strong enough it will turn on mobile data. If this is what was really happening then you would probably notice the symptoms in and around the same place and on the same wifi network. Could this be it?

My 5 has 'download booster' but I'm on T-Mobile.

On the Note 3 Download Booster was only supposed to work on large files. It never seemed to work right for me.

I already had that turned off. :/
