why does wi -fi drain phone batt so fast

Any advice I am not a heavy phone user so tend to have older phones, I have an old galaxy ace and a fame, I can leave the wi-fi setting switched on , on the galaxy ace and it has no effect on battery drain where as leaving wi-fi switched on , on the fame drains a fully charged battery in about six hours. If i switch off the wi-fi the phone batt will last at least 4 days the ace with wi-fi on lasts 5 days, have been over the phone duplicating settings from the ace , this has no effect. I also keep data switched off on both phones. The only explanation I can come up with is when wi-fi is switched on it is making some kind of connection somewhere. cant find what it is or how to block it

Wow... the Galaxy Ace was released six and a half years ago, only two years after the Motorola Droid. I have to salute you for your affection for antique phones!

Since the operating system probably hasn't changed on the Ace, I have to wonder if the WiFi you generally connect to has. Maybe the router is not backward compatible with the wifi on your phone... so your phone is using more power to search further out for a connection? The available and connected WiFi networks in Settings would be an interesting clue. just to see what it's connecting to and what it's showing as available.

thanks for your reply, both of the phones only connect to the Wi-fi from my personal router, (at home unless needed elsewhere) so the comparison is both from the same place , how would I check what the wifi is connecting to.

my museum of old phones is open 9-5 closed on Saturday

further to my last post the available networks = 10 all not in range bar the one I'm connected to is there a way to instruct the phone to forget the networks I do not need
