Why doesn't the G1 come preloaded with Apps for Google News and Google Reader?

I greatly prefer using apps like the telegraph news program over googles mobile versions... why aren't their dedicated apps for Reader and News?

I sort of agree. Reader is as important to me as Gmail (maybe slightly more important), and more important to me than Calendar. A dedicated/optimized Reader app would have made me quite happy.

But, the mobile web app for the G1 (which is not the same as the no frills mobile web Reader version you get on, say, a Symbian phone) is actually about 90% a capable as the full Reader app. The only thing I really find missing is that the shortcut keys don't work (such as s, t, j and k), and you can't add/edit tags. If it did those things, I'd be 100% happy with the G1's Reader experience, even though it's a web app and not a locally optimized app.

I've been happy with the mobile web versions of Reader and News, but I agree that it'd be awesome to have a native Android Reader app. Maybe someone will write one, but until then I've simply got a shortcut on my desktop to the mobile web Reader site.

This has been the most disappointing part of Android so far. Google only seems to have added search and Gmail to it, all their other services are not represented (yet).

I'm hoping someone at Google is working hard on more apps to take advantage of their services!

You forgot Calendar.

(I'd also say "Contacts", but that's really part of Gmail)

I would also have to 2nd the notion of a native reader app

im kind of annoyed at the fact that the reader has to run through the browser but it works great and I guess I have to suck it up and live with all the multiple windows for now haha
