Why I am Giving Up The Cliq

I have found these forums very useful so I thought I'd share my experience with the CLIQ and why I am leaving it.

First let me say I am an iPhone user and was and am switching providers so I decided that I would get the next best thing Android.

So far I have loved the Android operating system, but the CLIQ not so much. I had a few different problems, maybe just a bad device, but I feel otherwise.

Some of the issues I experienced and am curious to see if anyone else has:

The CLIQ fried the SIM card less than 4 hours of having it.

The reception was TERRIBLE. In my home all I would get was a GPRS connection. When I placed my T-Mobile SIM in an unlocked iPhone 2G I would get full EDGE bars.

Taking photos were great, but video, not so good. Every video I took had no focus at all and was completely fuzzy, no matter the lighting conditions.

Battery life was also terrible. I would only get about 6 hours of standby with the device and without warning at times it would just shut off.

Finally, I will start this by saying that I am spoiled by the iPhone's touchscreen that I have been using for the last 3 years, but the CLIQ's touchscreen was not the most responsive thing in the world and at times would be completely unresponsive.

I know that maybe I got a bad device, but was curious to see if anyone has had any similar issues. While I am giving up on the CLIQ, I am not giving up on Android: I have the Samsung Behold II coming first thing in the morning.
 
sry to hear that mate, but ive had no such problems. i havent heard of anyone else having those problems either. im pretty sure it was a bad device. good luck with your next one :/
 
I have to agree, it sounds like you had a dud of a phone. Hopefully the Samsung works out for you. I need the physical keyboard and absolutely LOVE my Cliq!

Yup - bad device. I've not heard of anyone with those issues, can you still replace? Perhaps if you get tired of the revolving cube on the Behold II ///

I am absolutely loving the Cliq, tried a Droid 2 different days for 45 minutes each time and just liked the Cliq better, really!

No reboots, no slow-downs & no weirdness so far, it just works!

Was I lucky and got a really good one??? Perhaps, but it's a keeper with Cupcake, Donut or Eclair. Does it really matter? The apps I need/want all work, work well in fact so I can be patient... :D

I do have to say that I have had two cliqs so far, and I have to say that on both of them the screen is unresponsive sometimes not verry often but like when its loading or when, lets say u pull the phone away from your face and as soon as the screen lights up and I hit END its unresponsive for a sec. and I have to hit it again. This resulting in hearing people complain about the long voicemail I left them of nothing. Its a good thing I have unlimited, but some people dont.
 
I am too a former iPhone user on the cliq. I have very similar problems with it not being very responsive and battery dying after 6 hours..

I blame most of that on my use however. I have over 6,000 contacts in it, and lots of apps. Seems like it uses lots of battery power to update and sync all the contacts constantly. My email and texting is pretty active so it's not helping the battery life much.

Despite the annoyances, I am happy with what i have and still see it as a major upgrade from the iPhone. If I could, I would take the droid, but I didn't want to leave T-mobile.
 
I'm very happy with the Cliq. I agree that I would probably be happier with the extra CPU and graphics oomph from a Droid, but I didn't want to dole out Verizon's rates. Got a really good deal with T Mobile.
If you haven't already tried it, I've found that turning my screen brightness down made a HUGE difference in battery life.

The cliq is much better than the droid anyway.....they both use the same battery but the droids larger screen is an even worse battery killer.... I find the cliq's screen size to be very adequate...

the droid also has a flat keyboard which isn't as easy to use as the cliq's rounded keys....

cliq also has 5 home pages and the droid only has 3

for all the hype over the droid, the cliq is a better unit.

I'm not sure what the difference is between 1.5 and 2 which is the only big difference I can see between units.... but I hope they'll keep upgrading the cliq's software so it doesn't matter....

I'm having some issues similar to @ZeroOveride... since I had a pre-ordered unit, I'm hoping that it's just a dud and the new one that T-Mobile is shipping out won't have these issues... cause if so I may have to get an unlocked iPhone or the Behold II... it would be a pity though because I really do love my Cliq... I even picked out a new case for it :-)
 
I am loving my cliq. Although I cn say I too had a bad device at first but the second is flawless and after I installed the update it fixed my issues with the touch screen. You should get another one and try it out.

PD: I didn't know the droid used the same battery as the cliq, how is the battery life because of the larger screen and faster processor it gotta run out very fast

wow...am i the ONLY one that hsa had same problems as u? I am receiving my 2ND CLIQ in 2-3 days because i have had so many problems. I am also getting a new sim card because i get so many dropped calls. I HOPE i do not have anymore problems becuase i cannot aford to BUY another phone outright. Ive only had a t-mobile for 3 weeks now and working on my 2nd device (sad huh?), Wish me luck :)
 
UPDATE: I have my replacement cliq and it's running sooo much better. I still get the motoblur.com errors (anybody get those but me) I think it has to do with the messaging widget... other than that, everything else is great. I think it was just a bad first device considering that after I compared the two off the bat I noticed that the power key on my first one was super loose... I thought it was how it was suppose to be but apparently not!

I hope that everything works out for those of u that need or have replaced your cliqs!
 
I had problems with my first cliq was told to send it back for and exchange that was before the update so don't know if the update would have fixed the phone or not - battery life horrible, touch screen unresponsive at time and email accounts could receive but not send, --- now new phone, updated software, learned the screen is temperature sensitive, battery holds a charge, loaded my email accounts no problem --- could not be happier -- last phone was a B/B and i was addicted to it --- the SIM card would fry in the B/B at the worst possible time when I was out of town and no T-Mobile stores to be found told me there are a lot of reasons --- normal life on SIM card on data phone 1 -1/2 years but some last longer but mine was 3 months max -- said it could be the phone, bad batch of cards, or a static charge frying it --- T-mobile did some trouble shooting on my phone after the fourth SIM card and have not had a problem
 
I had many of the same problems and went through two units before dropping T-Mobile all together. Battery dying in 6 hours, keyboard back-light not coming on in dim/no light, unresponsive touchscreen. After the second unit, I called T-Mobile and cancelled my contract and went to Verizon the same day for a Droid. Haven't had any problems since. Plus, I've got 3G in my area now. No more EDGE for this guy.

But in regards to making a comparison between the Droid and the Cliq - The Droid is noticably faster and more responsive and the battery life is phenominal given the amount of apps I run in the background. I can charge this thing every other day. This may be a product of an Android 2.0 optimization, but whatever it is, it works. The screen and screen surrounds on the Cliq seemed cheap to me, whereas the Droid's seems much more high end. The sliding mechanism on the Droid is the bomb. I don't have to worry about the thing sliding open accidentally or feeling toyish in my hands like the Cliq did. The keyboard on the Droid on the other hand is complete crap. Forget touch typing on the thing. A+ to the Cliq in this department. Another A+ for including a headset too. What knuckle headed bean counter at Motorola decided to ship a self proclaimed "iPhone Killer" without a proper headset? I mean come on, seriously?

Overall, I think the Droid's a much more solid device. It seems less like a feature phone and more like a smart phone, something the Cliq prays to little baby Jesus it could be like. While I appreciate the effort Motorola's made with Blur, it just seems un-polished UI-wise. Need to take some hints from HTC on that one, if you're gonna skin Android, design it to look BETTER than Cupcake. Personally, I'm a fan of 2.0.1 and find most of the functionality of Blur negated by free apps on the market. So, I think until we see a SnapDragon-based Android phone from HTC running Sense on top of 2.0, Droid's the clear winner here.
 
I am still on the two week "trial" period of a new device (moto cliq from tmobile). I am almost certainly going to return. I've been glued to this phone for the past week, exploring it's functionality, apps and getting a feel for what the phone can (and most importantly) cannot do. The first thing I discovered is that the AndroidOS does not fully support MMS messages. Really???? come on Google.
Next, I see what people mean about the phone being a bit sluggish between screens or apps. Again, not what I expect from the new sleek OS with tons of functionality.
Today is the 8th day I've had the phone, I have had numerous problems so far with sending/receiving SMS/MMS. Even something as simple as sending my sister of picture of her 1 year old niece does not happen, but when I send a text to see if she recieved the pics, I get a quick reply that she did not in fact recieve the pictures messages. WEAK!!!
The end call button is a bit too sensative when you're on a call, I've hung up on several people becuase my cheek hits the screen. I know...maybe that means my cheeks are too fat, I do need to lose a few. :)

Overall, I think it's a great phone with lots of great features, I just think they should be fine tuned a bit. For me, not worth switching from a simple Blackberry Pearl, which worked just fine and did what I needed. I will admit though, that Google Talk is very cool and served it's purpose on several occasions this week.

From what I hear & read AT&T sucks (I'm in NY metro), but I have never met an iPhone user who said their phone has issues like this.

I would appreciate any feedaback on this, but as of now the CLIQ is slowly making it's way back to the store.
 
I experiened this last night, and I was certainly asleep. Person sends me txt this morning to say, "I saw I missed your call last night, everything OK?"
 
I can totally relate to the frustration... I was having problems with calling people left and right until they released the recent software update... I've had the phone since it was released...

I won't lie... sometimes I wish I would have gotten the new Blackberry 9700 but at the same time I really enjoy the android experience. I love the customization, the apps, and the potential to push limits that Apple iPhone fails to do. Though I wish that touch screen experience matched that of the iPhone... I'm willing to work with it.

If you do decide to return the Cliq...I do suggest at least trying the Behold II or MyTouch... the MyTouch is rootable so if there are aspects that you DON'T like, wonderful people have made roms that make that experience SO much better!
 
blackberry? you must be kidding. Yes the cliq can be touchy but what about the advantages? the great apps, touch screen, price, keyboard (ok the blackberry has that too), the potential for apps have you tried the apps? the exchange sync, recording, video, I like my cliq very much. I'm not crazy about calling per se but texting, good i think for me.

I have the behold 2 and am thinkin of gongto the cliq lol. Im on my 3rd behold2 as all 3 of them have a "preparing sdcard" message which keeps putting my tones/alert sounds back to stock several times a day. the phone is sluggish but this may all be fixed with an update as it still has android 1.5!!!
camera/video is awesome though
