Why is Gmail constantly syncing?

I just checked my Google sync settings in the Settings menus and it is showing a constant "circling" icon for Gmail sync. Why is it taking so long to do this? Maybe this is why my phone is feel hot right now.

I asked a question in a separate forum about the Gmail sync options within the app, but haven't gotten a response yet. Maybe someone here can help me. I'm really confused about the various sync options and what they do, despite the simple-sounding names (all, 30-day, none). For example, when I set my "All Mail" folder to "sync all," it loads constantly and does nothing; when set to "30 days," it was showing all my mail *except* the last month; and when I set it to "none," it shows everything!

Here's the link to that question. Please help me figure out how to set these options and make the syncing stop running constantly!

I have mine set to all/999. no problems. if it's syncing that heavily, it may be stuck on a large amount of emails (too many), large size of emails (lots of attachments, or just large ones), and/or your connection is terrible (wifi or 4g).

But what exactly is it doing when syncing? Is it downloading all the emails to my device?

Definitely not my network. I'm getting great speeds right now.

What is the purpose of 999 days? When I set "All mail" to "none," it shows everything!

All the headers and email content that are text. If you set it to download attachments as well, those too.

What if I don't want it to download anything and instead just have it act like the web version, where I see everything when I'm online? Is that possible?

Turn off the download attachments, then set it to sync only 1 day. It would then jusy retrieve more emails on demand.

So do the sync settings only have to do with what is downloaded to the device? They have nothing to do with what emails you see when using the app online?
