Why is it not possible to change status bar?

unless i'm mistaken, it's not possible to change status bar appearance except by flashing an entirely new ROM. for example, i want my htc to have nexus one's status bar. why is that? it seems like a simple thing.

its built into the system if you are rooted you can find a rom with a custom bar you could even meta morph if your rooted i also remember in my cyanogen ROM on my g1 like last year there was an option for changing the color
