Why is my phone phoning home?

jeffshead

Lurker
I noticed in my firewall logs, my Android is attempting to connect to the following IP address:

IP address: 140.205.203.101 Port: 8015
netname: ALISOFT
descr: Aliyun Computing Co., LTD
address: Beijing, China

Googling did not turn anything up for me and I searched Google Play Store using the terms "Alisoft" and "Aliyun" but did not find any associated apps on my phone.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can find out which app (assuming it's an app) is "phoning home" and why?

What phone is it, make and model, is it a Chinese brand? Because if it is, it might not necessarily be something you've installed. Have you got anything GO on there?

Aliyun is a cloud data services provider, rather like Amazon S3. There's many free apps and games that come from China that might be using it. To find out if there's a particular one on the phone, might have to block them on an app by app basis to see when it stops contacting the Beijing server.

Thanks for the reply :-)

After installing NoRoot Firewall, I found the app. It's UC Browser. I haven't done anything else at this point but my guess is it's either checking for updates or it's providing some other info back to them.

I keep my workstations locked down pretty tight. I knew there would be several apps and built-in functions of the phone that need Internet access but HOLY SMOKES! I had no idea there would be this many background connections even when no apps are open. This is the very reason it took me so long to make the jump to "smart phones".

Yes, Aliyun is a cloud data services provider, rather like Amazon S3.
