Why is the WiFi about one quarter the speed of my laptop?

I just did some simple tests downloading the same file from my NAS via my WiFi.
Samsung Tab 2 10.1 - 2.73 MB/s
Windows 7 laptmop - 9.6 Mb/s
Samsung Google Nexus smart phone - 1.81 MB/s - Just for grins.

It's slow enough that some video's are unwatchable they stop for a few seconds and start up again.

Any ideas why? Anything I can do? I would've thought at least 5 to 6 Mb/s as 54 mbps is, at least, the rated speed of the slowest protocol of the wireless access point. Although it's likely somewhat faster based on the laptop numbers.

The tablet WiFi setting states Link Speed is 65 Mpbs.

FWIW the Wireless Access Point is a Gigabit LAN port as is the NAS.
