my problem is that when i play a movie (video) there is no picture, only sound. How can i fix this ?

It may be that the video is encoded using a compression codec that simply isn't installed on your machine.

Yes, you need to use something gspot to identify the codec and then you can download the codec and install it. Best to stear clear of codec packs.

In regards to wmp, I dont like it. I play videos with Media Player classic home cinema (kind of 3rd party rework of Media player classic), simply because it plugs into windows media centre easily(ish) and plays things better.

VLC is the best for video files IMHO though.

For audio, WMP is poor quality. Even winamp is much better!

Actually if anyone could advise me anything that they prefer for audio over winamp, I would be interested.

Have you tried Foobar2000?

+1 to VLC -holidays get added icons (santa hat on christmas for example) and it works great too ;)
and
+2 to Foobar love the customization (once you get it set up ;))
