Why is Yahoo Messenger running in the background

Yahoo Messenger and plug-in is using 25MB of RAM. If I sign in and sign out it stops running in the background. But if I reboot the phone, there it is again. Is there anything u cab do, or should I just use a different messenger?

Thanks all.

Okay, I think it auto starts so in case you are logged on when you reboot or shutdown the phone, it will automatically log you on when you power on the phone again. I cannot find a setting to change egos behavior. I do not use YM much.

There are two different things here. One, apps that run in the background are NOT using any battery power. Do a search here on "task killers" and you will find plenty of info on that.

Second, and somewhat contrary to my previous statement, some apps DO run in the background. Apps like music player (when you are paying music), naviagtion (when you are in nav mode), and apps like instant messengers (when they are signed in, so you can keep in touch all the time). That being said, I have yet to see a messaging app that doesnt let you sign out when you are not using it. I havent used Yahoo, but I'm sure there is an option to sign out and STAY signed out until you want to use it.

Yes it stays signed out, if you log out, and the background apps actually close when you sign out. But from a fresh start or a reboot it will auto start BUT NOT auto log-on. Under permissions it says: "automatically start at boot, read sync settings, read sync statistics".

No, I do not want it to sign in when I boot the phone. That is not a problem. YM does not sign in when I boot the phone.

But even if I do not have is set to sign in automatically, it still YM auto starts but does not sign in. I guess I do not like the fact that it eats up 25MB of RAM.

Thanks.

Actually I installed eBuddy, and I think I will be using that messenger instead.

Yes, that seems to be correct. Sometimes I see only one of the YM application running in "Running Services" so the phone does seem to unload by itself from time to time. Still, things that run on their own without letting me control it bother me, especially since I hardly use it. Think I will just use eBuddy Messenger instead.

Thanks all,

That is somewhat self defeating...see, these are "smartphones," yet we do not allow them to function as intended?

YM is not something I am logged into all the time, even on my laptop. I used it to communicate with some friends and clients at pre-arranged (via email) times. I do see the advantage of having YM running 24/7 if I had plenty of contacts there. SMS still is the "instant messenger" used in the Philippines. Having it stay resident in the memory when not logged on does not make sense.

I have mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, weather, news and twitter all set to sync either or real time or fixed intervals... and that is about all the phones battery can take, so I have been looking even for the smallest things to disable (like instead of the default setting of getting weather from 7 cities I reduced it to only getting weather from my current location).

Basically, if I kept it running, I really would not use it more often than a few minutes one or twice a month. Am not really a YM user. But when someone wants to communicate with YM it is nice to have a compatibly utility. It would be nice to have a disable the autostart of the app.
