Help Why new dialer app uses stock dialer?

xdonna

Lurker
I have installed and tried couple of dialers lately. I've tried Contacts+ and ExDialer but now I decided to go with Simpler Contacts & Dialer. Everything is fine with Simpler, but when I select a person from the contact list (or punch in a number) and start a call pressing the green call button, my phone suddenly starts stock dialer..?!

I uninstalled Simpler and tried with Contacts+ but same thing there, call button opens stock dialer..

On my Settings > Default applications I have only 2 items listed. Home (Buzz launcher) and Messages (TextSecure). I'm using Samsung S4 Mini, v4.4.2.

How do I prevent stock dialer from starting up when I make a call?

The dialler or rather the phone app itself that's used during phone calls is a system thing, and can't be changed usually. And your contacts app or whatever else you use invokes it for placing the actual phone call. You might be able to do something with rooting and hacking, but I've never looked at that.

It's one reason why many tablets can't make phone calls, because they don't have the system phone app.

Hold up Mike - respectfully, I don't think that's so. I've used 3rd party dialers and replaced my stock one. Stock browser and stock sms are system apps, we replace those all the time.

I can't speak to tablets and dialers, I've never done more than play with them, so I don't want to cross you on that part.

The Android system of defaults and intents is what makes Android choices possible - other systems don't have it.

Anyway -

To clear the stock dialer try - main settings, Apps, All - find the phone/dialer, see if there's a default there.

Failing that, uninstall and reinstall the app that isn't behaving right (contacts?), maybe it lost its mind or something.

No probs EM. :) It's just on every phone I've had, including using custom ROMs, can change the contacts app or the keypad app, but when I press the green button and actually make the phone call, it's starts ringing, etc, it's always been the stock phone app that appears for me, whether it be Samsung, Lenovo, Oppo, CyanogenMod(AOSP) or fake Samsung.

OK, you're absolutely correct - I was confusing the dialer with the actual phone app.

If I remove the default from my phone app and try the replacement dialer, I get the choice of my apps capable of telephony - in my case, the phone or Skype.

Yes, scratch what I said, you're absolutely correct! :)

So, in conclusion, there is no way to avoid that stock app?
It just seems so silly. When I start a conference call during a call, or when I put the speaker on during a call or when I end my call, there's always that stock app even though I started with a third party app...:(
