Why the new Sim card?

My new S5 should arrive shortly. I'm upgrading from the S3. They are also sending a new Sim card. Will the old one not work or fit? Will I not be able to switch a working Sim card back and forth between the S3 and S5? Thanks.

Hi

New card is needed for LTE to work.

Roger

That's what they told me when I picked up my S5 at the store. I swapped in the SIM card from my S4 and it worked.

Not sure why they are pushing new SIM cards. Maybe because it's easier than assuming everyone will swap it over correctly and it cuts down on customer service calls. When I opened the S5 back cover the new SIM was already in place.

Depends, does the S3 use a full size Sim or the mini Sim? The S4 and 5 use the small one.

Just slide your old sim card in.

THe idiots that mann the phones don't know what they are talking about.

You get a new SIM card because they are actually quite inexpensive and it's easier to include a new SIM in each phone package than it is to try to sort who gets a new SIM and who doesn't.

There isn't a good way for your provider's distribution department to know if your current phone has a compatible card or not, so they do include it to save money.

The problem that I have is that they insert it into the phone for you. They probably also do this so that people don't call for help inserting it, but the slot on the S5 doesn't seem to be spring loaded. I had a lot of trouble getting the card out in order to insert my existing card.

ATT is pushing the new sim cards cause they are "more secure." they are giving these new sims for if you use the apps where you connect your credit card and tap to pay like Isis Wallet and other apps like that. Those kind of apps won't work unless you activate the new sim.

I'm currently using the old sim card that came in my s3 because I don't use apps like that, so if you dont use those apps feel free to use your old sim as long as it's a macro sim

The new sim card is wedged in there like a brick. As it isn't spring loaded I have no idea how one would go about getting it out when and if a new sim was needed.

Any ideas? I'm assuming needle nosed pliars should probably NOT be part of the solution (lol).

Straight pin works. So does a steak knife. Perhaps a razor knife.

Just don't dig too deep into the plastic and you are fine.

The new phone and Sim arrived. My Sim wasn't installed. I went ahead and installed it. Activation over the phone didn't work, so I went to the Web site. That was really easy and quick.

NFC support requires a special SIM, and older ones may not have whatever NFC needs, so that is one reason for replacement. I've got two S5's on the way and the order form shows "4G NFC SIM Card".
