why won't my pc recognise my samsung galaxy ace

When I connect my samsung galaxy ace to my PC it doesn't recognise the phone. I've tried using the KIES software but that deoesn't recognise it and I've tried the USB storage thing. On rare ocassions it does recognise but when i try to copy my photos from the phone to the pc the phone crashes.

Your usb cord or usb port is probably damaged. Try another usb cord and see if that works
