Wi-Fi Alliance announces "wave 2" of new features for 802.11ac

Instead of adding more letters to the 802.11ac name, or going further down the alphabet, the WiFi Alliance has just announced a second wave of features that are headed to the 802.11ac spec.

This new wave extends simultaneous MIMO support to multiple users, there will be more channels available for the 5GHz band, and the maximum channel bandwidth has been doubled.

The Wi-Fi Alliance says the following wireless routers will be able to benefit from these new features as long as they have the following chipsets. . .

- Broadcom BCM94709R4366AC
- Marvell Avastar 88W8964
- MediaTek MT7615 AP Reference Design and MT6632 STA Reference Design
- Qualcomm IPQ8065 802.11ac 4-stream Dual-band, Dual-concurrent Router
