Wi-fi connection problem on 7.1.1

Hi Guys. Since updating to 7.1.1 i have been experiencing lots of problems with my wi-fi connection here at home. Desktop PC is fine, the Wife's samsung galaxy s4 mini is fine but not my 6p. The wi-fi basically is working very intermittently and it's really doing my head in. Switch my data on and 4G kicks in straight away. Is anyone else here experiencing the same problem. Is there a quick fix for this problem please? Have re-set my broadband router but to no avail. It's not working now more times than it is. It was fine on 6.0 and 7.0, it's only since i upadted to 7.1.1 that this annoying problem started. Look forward to a bit of help/guidance. Thanks.

Hey @johnnyreggae71,

Could you tell us anything about your Wi-Fi network? Frequency (2.4GHz or 5GHz), security (WEP/WPA), etc?

You might also try going to Settings > More > Network settings reset. This will clear out any settings or preferences that may have gotten screwed up during the upgrade. You'll need to manually reconnect to networks and Bluetooth devices, but it may help with your issue.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,
codesplice

Oh heck i'm not that technically minded i'm afraid codesplice, all i know is my broadband router is through Virgin Media if that helps. Basically you're gonna have to help this old timer run though this process step by step please. Appreciate the reply.

No worries - it's not that important. :)

When you say 'manually' reconnect i'm not entirely sure what you're saying sorry.

Once you go through the "Network settings reset," the phone will forget everything it knows about your connected Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices. You'll need to reconnect those manually, like you did the first time.

I would suggest that you install the free Wifi Analyzer app. Once you launch it, the first screen will display a chart of how your Wi-Fi signal compares to other networks around you - making it easy to see if other networks might be crowding the same channel. If you want to just share a screenshot of that display, I'd be happy to provide feedback on it.

Don't know if this helps... yep im with virgin media.

That's quite helpful, actually - thanks!

How far is it to the router from where you made that measurement?

I ask because your signal strength looks to be ~-83dBm, which is pretty weak. According to many sources (like this one) suggest that -80dBm is the bare minimum for reliable connectivity.

Could you try moving closer to the router to see if it helps your connection stability?

The router is upstairs and i mainly use my phone downstairs so possibly that's the problem eh? The thing is my last phone the LG G3 always seemed to pull in a really great signal, weird? Hey thanks for giving up your time to try and get to the bottom of this problem it's much appreciated.

Any chance you could install that Wifi Analyzer app on your wife's S4 and possibly even your old G3? I'd be curious to see how they measure the signal strength from the exact same location. By the way, if you swipe from left to right from the Channel Graph display, you can see a chart that will plot signal strength over time. That could be handy to make sure you're seeing an average strength rather than an instantaneous one.

Just curious about your router's location. You mention it's upstairs and you're often downstairs but re-positioning your router might help extend its range a bit. If your Virgin modem/router device is sitting on a floor under a desk or something like that, it would help to move it on top of the desk or on top of a cabinet.
Take into consideration the WiFi antenna inside your modem/router is emitting a signal essentially as a very low-power radio broadcast, with your phone's internal antenna being on the receiving end. The more your wireless router is in the open the better. Also note that WiFi signals can also be affected by things like stucco and brick walls, metal cabinets, metal ducting, steel reinforced doors, and other really dense construction materials. On the other hand, WiFi signals can go through multiple drywall covered walls, typical plywood-covered doors, and will easily bounce through hallways. So the basic construction of your home can affect the overall range and coverage of your router's WiFi and just moving it few feet into a more optimal spot can often make a big difference.

I think you may have possibly hit the nail on the head there...positioning. Later today i'm gonna be moving the router as yes it is not in the best of places. Thanks for the advice.
