Wifi, bluetooth, mobile hotspot won't turn on

Craigb_MA

Lurker
New behavior in my Droid Maxx. I cannot get bluetooth, wifi, or mobile hot spot to turn on. There are no apparent errors displayed when I attempt to turn on any of them. Device is not in airplane mode as normal over the air voice/data is fine connecting to both 3G & 4G LTE modes. I've done both hard & soft reboots that don't change the behaviors

Bluetooth screen. I tap the On button, a message comes up stating that its turning on Bluetooth, but after 5 seconds it still lists as Off and no BT icon appears on my status bar.

Wifi: I tap the On button and instantaneously it goes back to the Off position. I've tried turning Wifi on via several different appsand menus, but all have the same result. Wifi icon never appears in status bar.

Hotspot: I have a data plan that includes hotspot, and it's always worked up until now. Same behavior as bluetooth where I click the check box in Settings to turn it on, but after a few seconds the box is simply unchecked again. No error message displayed.

Separately, I've also noticed that the "your app will work better/faster on Wifi" pop up for many apps like Google maps. The checkbox in settings that allows me to turn off that prompt is greyed out and I cannot turn it off like it used to.

Any thoughts?

That MA on your name, that for Massachusetts? That could be the problem.:p

Actually, I've noticed every once in a while on my Moto X that I need to powercycle to get it talking again. Especially BlueTooth.

LOL Unforgiven.

I should have also included that I've rebooted the device, both hard & soft reboots, multiple times with no change in behavior.

I also tried to get into the undocumented diagnostics screen at reboot in order to clear the cache, but only got it to come up once and I couldn't select that option (user error). But since then I havent been able to get that screen to come up again.

You don't mention root or custom rom, so I'm going to say it sounds like a hardware problem. Your thread is in the Maxx forum, so maybe there is a quirk specific to the Maxx and another device owner can lend a hand.

Correct. Device is not rooted, nothing customized. It's reasonably new so havent mucked with the stock image very much (yet). Is there a different forum I should have posted this to?

Not at all. I have a Moto X, not a Maxx. You posted in the perfect place, but as a new member I had to approve your post, so I responded at the same time.:)

Did you try running in Safe Mode (disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them)? If it works there then it is caused by an app that you added.

I had a problem where the buttons on the front stopped working. I tried everything. In preparation for turning it in for an exchange I did a Factory Data Reset. The problems stopped and never came back.

Some problems that look like hardware end up being solved by resetting.

Yes, also tried Safe Mode. No change.

I saw on some forum that doing a partition cache wipe might help. But when I get to the screen and select Recovery, instead of getting another set of options like all the forums indicate that allows me to select this option, instead I get an icon of a fallen down Android with an exclamation point popping out its chest with a "No Command" error. Not sure how to get to the next screen.

This procedure removes temporary files does not delete any files or settings ...

With Maxx powered off
Press Volume Down and Power for 2-3 seconds and release

Display -- AP Fastboot Flash Mode
Press Volume Down to select Recovery
Press Volume Up to select

Display -- Motorola logo and then Exclamation mark logo
Press Volume Up for 10-15 seconds
While still holding Volume Up press Power and release both

Display -- Android System Recovery
Press Volume Down four times to select Wipe cache partition
Press Power to select

Maxx will perform the cache partition wipe and then boot normally.

Under 4.4.4 this will take from 4.5min to 6.5min to complete.

I remember reading that somebody had trouble with wifi and Bluetooth not toggling properly and it was solved when they uninstalled an app called Tiny Flashlight. On the off chance you have that app, maybe that's it. Or maybe it's another app. Something recently installed or updated?
