WiFi Calling- Pay or Not?

mobilco

Lurker
I just switched to T-mobile from Verizon. I purchased an HTC Sensation and a 500 minute plan with 2 GB data from a T-Mobile store. I was told in the store that I could make WiFi calls and they would not count against my minutes. I just looked at my usage and the WiFi calls seem to count, albeit they are free weekend minutes right now. I called T-mobile customer service and they stated that the WiFi calling used to be free with certain Blackberries, but now minutes are used. I don't know who to believe.

I do not get cell coverage at my house, so the free WiFi calling was a big deal to me. I have 13 more days to decide if I want to stick with T-Mobile. 4G seems to suck in my immediate area, so I don't know what advantage T-Mobile has any more over other carriers. Anybody deal with this recently?

Thanks

Your only recourse is to talk to the representative(s) who told you that and put a boot in their ass. There hasn't been an option for unlimited WiFi calling for a few years and even then there was a monthly charge for that privilege.

To clarify what you have versus what you thought you had:

The left side, "@Home/Unlimited HotSpot Calling", is the old feature that is only available to those who snagged it before it disappeared. The right hand side, "GAN-Lite", is what Android devices can use.

I looked at my usage again today and it shows the wifi as hotspot calls and it shows them as unlimited. My first day of service was yesterday, so I think my usage data was just not fully expanded, it was changed, or I missed it. I'm happy and hope T-Mobile works out for me.

You're right. Looks like T-Mobile reintroduced that back in May. Suppose I should Google, versus going straight to Tmo's website.

I'd still put boots in rep-ass, for the lulz.

Yup wifi calling uses plan minutes...there is even a warning on my cliq 2 about that.

That's exactly where I started with all of this. As soon as my WiFi calling fires up it says in the notification bar "uses plan minutes". I guess back in May T-Mobile went back to free wifi calling at no cost, but it does require that feature to be activated; or at least that's what my T-Mobile store managing fiancee tells me.

Unlimited WiFi or Hot Spot calling is a free feature. If the feature is placed on your line then you will not use up your package minutes. However if you don't have the feature on your phone it will.

Just call customer service and ask them for the free feature.

When I called and asked for free Wi-Fi calling on two lines, they instead added the $9.99 HotSpot service to both lines. Can anyone confirm whether the $9.99 service is required for "free" Wi-Fi calling?

I don't think Hotspot is what you are looking for, the $10 hotspot I think is to connect your laptop to your phone for data purposes?
