Wifi instead of 3G - apps not connecting

When at work I switch on my Wifi so that I don't use my plan data unnecessarily.

When I do that it switches off 3G (which is good) but then most of my apps don't seem to connect - eg Facebook, Market, GMail, etc...

So are most apps not able to operate on Wifi alone? Is there some config I need to change to make the apps be able to switch easily between 3G and Wifi connectivity?

No, apps should be able to run on Wifi alone (unless its something that's obviously a mobile network type service). To them, its just another data network. I would think its something with the internet connection over wifi that isn't letting them connect.

All solved - I had to login to the Wifi connection (thru the browser) not just connect
