Wifi problems on Samsung A3 2017 on marshmallow

Using my A3 at home using the Sky router, I frequently get times when the speed is really slow or stops entirely. The signal strength appears fine. When I disconnect and reconnect the wifi on the phone, it's fine for a while. The phone is ok on other wifi nextworks, and other devices on my home network are ok.

The issue occurs with the 2g and 5g wifi. I've tried restarting the router and phone. I've tried different DNS servers. When I'm having problems I opened termux and tried pinging a domain, and get no packets returned.

Maybe nougat would sort it out, but I don't know when that's coming. Anything else to try?

There are heaps of good free wifi apps could using one of them until nougat work for you, if they work that is?

OK, so I got nougat, but it's still going on. I did a full factory reset - no joy.

@fecallacies, not sure what apps you meant. They all just seemed to include signal strength & channel measurements but nothing that helps me.

Anything else to try?

On your Sky router if you have the option to set up a 'guest' network, do so keeping all the options for this guest network at their defaults and see if your phone has the same WiFi issues while connected to it.
-- If your A7 is able to stay consistently connected to your guest network that's probably due to some random setting in your primary network's configuration. Then it just becomes a matter deducing which one. You could just sit down and compare the two, or just do reset of your router to its default settings and set up a new, clean, and secure home LAN. Yes it's a bit of a pain as you need to also re-enter your new SSID/password into all your other devices but if gets everything on your network it's a long term gain. I've found this 'RouterCheck' app to be a really good utility to use on WiFi network, it does a basic security check of your router settings and it's related documentation is very, very good.

-- If your A7 encounters the same problem with intermittent online access while on your guest network, try disabling IPv6 and see if that helps. Also if you have any kind of anti-virus/anti-malware utility on your A7, try disabling it and see your connectivity becomes more consistent again.

Regarding the use of one of the WiFi analyzing apps, they can help with with more than just showing channels and signal strength. By doing a quick walk-through of your home and measuring any weak spots that could a part of your problem. WiFi signal strength is a big variable and is in no way consistent so you can make simple changes like re-positioning your router that can make significant improvements in WiFi coverage. If your router has one or more external antennas re-aiming it (or them) can also help. This site gives a short but thorough explanation of WiFi fundamentals. It's a little dated but worth reading through and gives you insight on deducing what may or may not be relevant to fixing your problem.

If you live in a more densely populated location (i.e. an apartment or condo complex) I'd pay a lot of attention to the 'noise floor' section.

Update on this old thread: The connectivity issue is still ongoing and also happens on my wifi at work.
Wifi icon shows full bars but 'internet may not be available'. Can't connect to websites by address BUT I can connect via ip address. So it's got to be DNS related, right? DNS settings on the wifi connection were set to google. I tried opendns but no joy. Is there anything else to check?
