Wifi: PSK or Redirects?

We all have been warned of using public WiFi, but what about PSK-secured or redirected (but still unsecured) WiFi? Hotels and some restaurants use redirected WiFi (but as it's still open, I don't expect it to be secure). How much security do both WiFi management methods provide?

Hi lectraplayer,

I've moved your thread to the Android Lounge where I hope it will get a bit more exposure.

On to your question, though... it really depends on how secure you need to be. What are you planning on doing on these wifi networks? Are you casually browsing the web, or conducting financial transactions? These are things to consider when you're trying to decide whether to connect to a given Access Point.

Realistically, any Open wifi should be considered insecure. Your bits will be floating around in the air for any malicious party to grab and use against you (potentially). When you connect to an AP secured with WPA, on the other hand, all of those bits are still floating around BUT they're encrypted. They'll be useless to anyone who wants to pick them up, so your connection (and privacy) is secured.

The security on the Internet-side of the AP (redirect, hotel login, etc) doesn't do anything for the security of the connection between your device and the AP, which is the really risky part about connecting to an unsecured wifi AP.
