Help wifi rarely auto-connects

I'm running 2.2 on a Droid 2 and I was wondering why my device barely ever connects to wifi. I am pretty much always in a wifi area and I almost always have to tell the device to connect to wifi manually. And sometimes even when I tell it to connect to a signal it tries and then fails and I have to turn wifi off, then turn it back on and connect again (sometimes several times). Is there a way to get it to auto connect more reliably?

I have similar problems, but I am experiencing something additional too. When it does decide to connect it'll just loop and not actually connect.
