Hello driffty.

Well, it's a fairly straightforward procedure, setting up a connection with a wifi network and an Android device (here's a video of it being done with the Sony Xperia Z: How To Set Up Wi-Fi On Your Sony Xperia Z - Phones 4u - YouTube).

Sometimes a weak or barely existent connection happens because the router is set on a channel with a lot of traffic. If you have access to the router's settings, try changing the channel (1-11).

How does the Xperia Z perform on other wifi networks, such as a friend's or at work or in a public place hotspot?

No problem with the WiFi. At home, at school, at Starbucks, McDonald's and any other place you can name of. Maybe you can try adjusting the modem's antenna. I have a friend and when his modem's antenna is slightly off-angle, the WiFi signal would shoot outside and stop going to your phone.
