WiFi Storage/Streaming?

Gunnzie

I was having a look at the Seagate GoFlex Satellite. This device is a portable hard drive with built in wifi and battery. It basically gives you a mobile data storage so you can access files from devices like tablets and stream video, etc.

This however comes at a fairly hefty price. So I wondered if it was possible to achieve something similar with my HTC Desire S phone (with 32Gb SD card) and my SGT 10.1 tablet. i.e. Some app that will turn my phone into a mobile hard drive that doesn't require me to be connected to a WiFi router. So adhoc mode directly between phone and tablet.

Is this possible? It won't have the same storage capacity obviously but then I save

Tested and working flawlessly with a non rooted phone. Please be careful when making definitive statements as less determined people may have given up after reading that.

Well I didn't know it was my responsibility to know every single app on the market. If you want to trust your SD open on a wifi network, go right ahead.

No offence but don't state something as fact then. Sorry, I genuinely don't mean to be harsh but I was going to give up after what seemed a certain reply to my post. I do appreciate trying to help though don't get me wrong.

Just to update this thread with the full solution in case anyone else is interested in future, the steps to do this are:

1. Install SDCard Wifi Access on your phone from https://market.android.com/details?id=de.ovengamedia.SDCardWifiAccess&hl=en

2. Enable the WiFi hotspot on your phone (i.e. the same thing you use for tethering)

3. Run SDCard WiFi Access on the phone

4. From the tablet, connect to the WiFi hotspot.

5. In a browser on the tablet, point it to the URL you are given in the SDCard WiFi Access application

6. You'll get a file explorer of the contents of your SD card on your phone. Select a video and then select the video player to run it in. It'll start streaming it from the phone.

Sure, there is a lack of security on this but the WiFi security is sufficient enough for me. If anyone was to get access to a SD card with a few movies on it, it's hardly the end of the world.
