Help WiFi Tethering and Bluetooth transfer problems

Hi guys,

Just got my Nexus 7 and I love it! Its awesome!

Today is my first time using it outside the house so I am trying to tether it to my phone to use the internet connection but am running into some problems...

The NExus has no problem connecting to the WiFi hotspot created by my stock Gingerbread HTC DHD, but can't then connect through to the web. If I try an access the web/check Gmail/Facebook etc using the DHD it connects to the web and pulls the data just fine. I have used my DHD to tether a friend's laptop in the last couple of weeks so I know its not a restriction on my T-Mobile (UK) data plan or anything like that.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

The other issue is a Bluetooth file transfer problem. Since The N7 has only 16GB of non expandable storage space I have been trying to BT some of the movies stored on my DHD across to the N7 to view. They are not huge files (for example, I have a 400MB is 720p, MKV Family Guy episode, but it just will not let me transfer it. The DHD tries and tries, but there is no notification on the N7 that a request to transfer has come in.

It seems to work OK (although the is a huge delay in anything happening on the N7) when I transfer a simple photo of something like that, but I can't get anything else to work.

I've tried using stock "Share via Bluetooth" and tried an app called Bluetooth File Transfer, but neither work.

Any ideas on this one too?

Thanks all

Hmm.....

Apparently it also won't allow me to transfer .apk files. I have a few Gameloft titles downloaded direct from their website that I can't find in the Play store. The Nexus/DHD won't let me transfer those.

It will let me transfer PDFs though.

Is it intentional to noly allow the transfer of certain file types?!

Go to Settings, Security and temporarily tick the Unknown Sources checkbox. I had to do that for the Amazon Appstore apk

Actually, you will need to leave that unticked to install apps you get from the Amazon app store. There is really no harm leaving it unticked if you are only getting apps from reliable sources (Play, Amazon, GetJar, direct from dev) and you pay attention to permissions. I you start getting apps from sketchy places (which you shouldn't, you should support the devs) then you can run into problems.

I already have the Unknown Sources tick box enabled, but that should stop the Nexus from receiving these file through Bluetooth transfer. It shouldn't be picky about what it will and won't allow to transmit/recieve.

It should be up to the user to decide this on a transfer by transfer basis.

I am having a little different tethering problem. When trying to tether to my HTC DINC 2 phone, my Nexus 7 hangs up at Authenticating and times out with an Authentication Problem message. I am able to Tether my Galaxy Tab, so I know it should work.

SOLVED FOR HTC DINC2--I was able to tether after changing the security on my phone to WEP. I got the authentication error with WPA and WPA2.

I *think* I've fixed the tethering issue. I think I was connected through T-Mobile Orange instead of T-Mobile proper. I also had data while roaming switched off on my phone.

But that doesn't explain why I could go on the web directly on the phone with those same settings.

The mystery deepens...
