Wifi

Can wifi always be turned on? If wifi is always on will it drain battery life? My thought is,by leaving wifi on if your in a wifi hot spot or places that have public access, your phone would automatically switch from 3g to wifi when a network is detected and switch back to 3g when no wifi is available.

Good idea bad idea?

As far as the whole good idea/bad idea goes, it depends on what kind of battery aids you have installed or added to your phone.

For the automatic WiFi, phones have this in a sense. For it to work, you will need to connect to the hotspot manually (select it from the WiFi network on your phone and connect to it). Once you've done so at least once, your phone should remember the location and if WiFi is left on it should automatically connect the next time you get in the hotspot area.

Hope this helps!

Yes, it can always be turned on. Like matt88si said, you will have to manually connect to a hotspot the very first time. After that, it will automatically connect to it once it is within range.

The bad part of the idea is, while you're out of range of a hotspot, the wifi will constantly search for another network, thus draining your battery quicker.

Most people create a shortcut on their home screen that toggles wifi, or pull down from the status bar and turn it on.
